1996 Indianapolis 500 Yearbook
IRL First Year at Indy
The first year for the Indy Racing League at Indy.
Cars from the previous year were used and new car specs would
be used in 1997. With the top name drivers not at Indy many wondered
what would happen at Indy with all the rookies.
It turned out to be an very exciting race with Buddy
Lazier winning his first Indy 500 with an all out effort run
in the closing few laps. In pain from a broken back, Lazier was
a very happy man in Victory Lane. The rookies did a very good
job at Indy in 1996.
Stories include a tribute to Scott Brayton; IRL owner
bios; Turbo engines final year at Indy; Buzz Calkins interview;
Indy program guide. Plus the normal stories on the race, practice,
box scores and starting line-up.
