California GoldThe
Legendary Life of Troy Ruttman
by Bob Gates
Author Bob Gates worked with the
Ruttman family for this book. Many photos were used from the Ruttman family
photo albums.
Troy started racing at 15 years
old in California. A natural-talented fearless driver. He started racing AAA
under age (19) with a altered birth certificate. Three years later, he won
Indy at the age of 22 in 1952. Sixty years later, Troy is still the youngest
winner at Indy.
August 17, 1952 at Cedar Rapids
an accident changed his life. He was out of racing for 18 months for
recovery and his life spiraled out of control.
The real story was Troy's ability
to bounce back in life. He had obstacles in life, many of his own making but
he kept coming back.
This is a story about his life
and racing was a means to support his family. He was a great inspiration to
many.
